From the Unusual to the Scenic: Winter Pictures of Durango Colorado
Can’t get to Durango for your winter vacation? Enjoy it vicariously with our winter pictures of Durango Colorado.
From gorgeous scenic shots to the incongruous, we found lots of fun things to share with you. Come along for a winter tour!
Winter in Durango can be not so snowy (the warm sun melts things off pretty quickly)…
…or very snowy. Despite the fact that we’ve been out in the winter quite a few times, we often seem to manage to miss the best snowfalls.
Usually, it snows the last day we’re there or the day we’re leaving. (Or sometimes, the day before... dragging our stay out a few extra days... poor us!)
But for Christmas 2006, we got our wish. A huge snow storm (the one that closed the Denver airport for three days!)…
…and a whole slew of new Durango photos to hang on our walls.
Gotta take pictures while the sun shines…I mean before the sun shines too long! My husband offered to drive me around in the afternoon during the storm.
Only problem with that was he didn’t see the fun things I kept finding to take pictures of, and we had to keep backing up or turning around to get them.
I snuck off the day after Durango got its two feet of snow. I snapped two hundred (or more) winter pictures of Durango Colorado and the surrounding areas.
Like this “avalanche”. These happen regularly after a heavy snow. The pines can only hold so much...Then WHOOSH! Sometimes right on your head!
Some of the winter Colorado pictures you catch through sheer luck. This elk herd was about a mile from our place.
And here’s something we hear often enough, but rarely see: a coyote.
We love how beautiful a fresh snowfall makes everything look. From rivers…
…to something as simple as a barbed-wire fence, snow can transform anything.
Then there are things like the train. It looks a lot different in the winter, even though it’s the same old narrow gauge train that runs all year.
To get some of the best winter pictures of Durango Colorado, you really have to pay attention.
Because things melt so fast, icicles adorn all sorts of things.
And the moon tends to have halos around it at night. (Don’t try shots like this without a tripod! It’ll make you insane!)
And if you’re really lucky, you’ll see something as unusual as these ducks, who obviously didn’t realize it’d be easier to fly south for the winter than live on a three-foot diameter pond.
Of course, you can catch the sunrise easier in the winter, too. But you still have to be up pretty early (and dress pretty warm) to catch the sun coming up on the La Platas.
If you’re in Durango near Christmas, by all means drive around at night. You can get into the holiday spirit by taking shots of downtown Durango from Fort Lewis College at night.
Or drive down 3rd Avenue and see how many of the old Victorian homes are lit up. We caught this one out by Sweeney’s Restaurant after dinner one night.
We hope you enjoyed our tour via winter pictures of Durango Colorado. As always, if you see a shot you’d like for your walls, contact us. We’d be happy to share our pictures with your family.
