No Mountain Adventure is Complete Unless You Stay in a Durango Resort
So, you’re looking for more than a simple motel, huh? How about a Durango resort? Of course many of them are called lodges, but either name still gives you the great resort vacation experience. One of them you’ll see listed is the one my husband and I stayed in on our wedding night (Tamarron, with an in-room Jacuzzi!). Though I’ve heard rumors they may no longer cater to nightly stays, the information I see on the web says otherwise. So I’ll include them, just in case. I’ll double check as well, and correct my information if it’s wrong. Most of these are right at Durango Mountain Ski Resort, or very close by. But don’t be fooled. Summertime is just as much fun up there with the alpine slide, chair lift rides, jeeping, horseback riding and more close by. So, summer or winter, you can be sure of a good time. How about a Durango resort located near Vallecito Lake? (Those with Bayfield addresses are near the lake). Since this is about three miles up the road from our place, we go there often. Gorgeous territory, and lots of quiet to laze about in. All but one of these resorts stay open all year round. As with hotels, since there are only a few, I’ll give a descriptive few paragraphs for each, to the best of my ability. Enjoy! This Durango resort, Angel Haus, is privately owned condominiums rented by the night or week. All units have lockers right outside to house your ski gear. Right at the base of the ski slopes, and close to the resort restaurants, you can do nothing but ski and relax, or, with complete kitchens, you can cook your own meals. Sounds like a great vacation to me! Bear Paw Lodge 18011 County Road 501 Bayfield CO 81122 Phone: 970-884-2508 Fax: Toll-free: Rates: Cabins run $85-145/night; Vacation Homes rent for $100-200/night
Highlights: Fully furnished cabins and homes Secluded and private
The Bear Paw Lodge looks like a premium Durango resort! My kind of place to stay. With either cabins or homes you can rent, you have a quiet retreat to stay with your family or friends. Right near Vallecito Lake, there’s plenty to do, spring, summer or fall. Bear Paw Lodge is tucked right up near the Weminuche Wilderness, if your fancy runs to really getting away from it all! Please note: This resort is only open May through November, though, so plan accordingly. Highlights: As Durango Mountain Resort boast seven different properties to choose from, I’ll give a brief rundown of each here, paragraph-style.
First, we have three “premier” choices. Black Bear Townhomes are newly constructed in what Durango Mountain Resort calls Tacoma Village. This Durango resort is located on the mountainside and built in what they call a mountain-style. The townhomes feature all the comforts of home, including 2-3 bedrooms and garages on each unit. Elk Point Townhomes are similar, but boast 3 and 4 bedrooms. These are situated right at slopeside. The master baths include whirlpool tubs, and they have “front row views” of the mountains from their decks. The third Durango resort rated as "premier" is Mountain Vacation Homes, a series of fully furnished homes you can rent for your ski vacation—or your summer retreat. Still near the ski area, yet with more privacy, these are a great choice for a quieter getaway. Next we have three choices considered “standard” accommodations. At slopeside is Purgatory Village Hotel. With a swimming pool and hot tub, this is a great place to stay. They have everything from studio rooms that house 2-4 guests to a 4-bedroom penthouse that can accommodate up to 10 guests. Then there’s the Durango resort of Cascade Village. They have everything from a “loft” to 1-3 bedroom townhomes, here, and even a log house you can rent. It sits at the base of Engineer Mountain, just 2 miles from the entrance to Durango Mountain Resort. The last “standard” Durango resort is the Lodge at Tamarron. Encompassing everything from studios to lofts to executive suites, this resort sits beneath the Hermosa Cliffs. One of Durango’s three 18-hole golf courses is here, as well. (Not counting mini golf…) Last, but not least in my book, is one site which is considered “economy”. Sitting mountainside are the East Rim Condominiums. Everything from studio to 3 bedrooms is offered here, in prices to ease your pocketbook, leaving spare change for a little fun. On to another Durango resort! Highlights: Cabins from one room to two storey Right on the lake Small grocery store on premises Full service marina on premises
This Durango resort offers both a place to stay, and things to do right there! You can get fishing licenses, fishing gear, fishing boats...great place for those who love to fish. And for those who love a beautiful setting, this is a great spot, too. And not too far from the doings in Durango, yet a quiet retreat at the end of the day. Elk Point Lodge 21730 County Road 501 Bayfield CO 81122 Phone: 970-884-2482 Rates: $102-134/night
Highlights: Right on Vallecito Lake Boat rentals available Horseback riding on premises “General store” onsite
Wow...I just realized that this Durango resort is the place I worked the summer I graduated from high school! Still the same great location on the “point” of the lake between two rivers that supply its water. I can’t remember the name the place had the summer I worked as a wrangler there (leading trail rides and caring for the horses). But I remember the owners of the time, Suzie and Gwenivere. New owners, but still lots of amenities. Not only can you stay here, you can horseback ride right outside your door, fish or boat, or sit at the main lodge and relax with family and friends. Hunting is easy when they offer semi-guided or fully guided hunts. And winter play is just as fun with guided snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing at your own pace. Sounds like a super Durango resort, doesn’t it? Pine River Lodge 14443 County Road 501 Bayfield Co 81122 Phone: 970-884-2563 Rates: $67-212
Highlights: Great Vallecito Lake views Fireplaces in some cabins Full kitchens in all cabins TV and VCR in each cabin Large playground onsite
This is another Durango Colorado resort right on Vallecito Lake. It boasts cabins that can sleep anywhere from 2-11 people with prices that fit any pocketbook. There’s even an indoor pool onsite (the lake is cold for swimming) which has one hour each morning slated just for the adults! Like the other Vallecito resorts, this one sells fishing licenses and hunting licenses, as well as firewood for the fireplaces some cabins have. And to me, one of the best parts is it’s been owned and operated by the same family since 1960! So, you can see there is a wonderful array of choices when you want to stay at a Durango resort.
