Escape the Everyday
and Live History at These
Durango Colorado Hotels

Looking for a little luxury? Try one of these Durango Colorado hotels for your stay. You can step back in time, and leave your cares behind. I know we always do.

Durango is slower paced, quieter than most people's ordinary lives. We like it that way. And you can experience that peace and easy pace by staying in a hotel in Durango Colorado, rather than the more mundane motels that pepper Main Avenue.

Since there are only six hotels, we've listed them in the same manner as the motels, but added a paragraph or two on why they're special. Only two of them are modern additions to historic Durango. The other four have been around nearly as long as the town has.

So kick back and enjoy the history. Let's take a tour of what these Durango Colorado hotels have to offer.

The DoubleTree Hotel is a relatively new one of the Durango Colorado hotels. Right on the corner of Highways 160 and 550, it perches on the banks of the Animas River. Having undergone several name changes, it seems to be holding as the DoubleTree.

They offer an onsite restaurant, the Edgewater Grille, with a lounge that overlooks the river. The Patio Café is open during the summer where you can sit out and enjoy the sun, as well. We can't vouch personally for the restaurant, but according to their brochure, it's 4-star.

One of the historic Durango Colorado hotels While we've never stayed in any of these Durango Colorado hotels, it's always a pleasure to stroll by and peek inside this on with its beautiful Victorian décor. Built in 1898, it's not the oldest hotel in town, but one of the prettiest.

Rooms include a Bridal Victorian Queen Suite with a "Jacuzzi for two" right in the room. All rooms boast a teddy bear on your bed, to welcome you and make you feel at home.

In the afternoon, you can take tea (or coffee) with your fresh-baked cookies, and relax in one of the splendid sitting areas. Then, you can step just outside and watch the train return from Silverton, if you want.

Of all the Durango Colorado hotels, this was the only one I couldn't find extra information on. No brochure. All we can say about it, is according to my family, who stays in a Hampton Inn in North Platte Nebraska when enroute to Minnesota to visit us, the Hampton Inn is very nice.

They do guarantee your satisfaction. I quote from their website: "As always your stay is backed by the 100% Hampton Guarantee. If you're not 100% satisfied, we don't expect you to pay."

Jarvis Suite Hotel
125 West 10th St.

Cable TV with HBO

Not to skimp on highlights, but this Durango Colorado hotel doesn't list many in its brochure which translate into simple highlights.

The Jarvis Building was originally known as the "Richer Block" building. It housed a succession of businesses, from a confectioner to a cobbler to a printer and a tailor.

Built in the early 1890s, it's actually a converted apartment complex, formerly housing the Gem Theater. Thus every suite has a fully equipped kitchen...and I mean fully equipped! Pots and pans and all.

While we've never been in it, it sounds like a neat place to stay.

Rochester Hotel

Fax: 970-385-1967
Toll-free: 1-800-664-1920
Rates: $109-229

Highlights:
Full gourmet breakfast
Old West décor

This is another of the Durango Colorado hotels whose highlights don't translate into a list (or who doesn't list their highlights in their brochure). They call it the "Hollywood of the Rockies" on their brochure, because they've decorated in an Old West motif inspired by the many movies filmed in and around Durango.

(City Slickers was filmed up my Mom's road one summer. The ranch that's now selling property at the end of the road calls itself "City Slicker Ranch". And no, I didn't meet Billy Crystal.)

Movie posters (framed in marquee lights) line the hallways. (We've got to go inside these places!) And cowboy décor makes an authentic Old West feel.

One of the oldest (no, not the the oldest) hotels, it has been operated as a hotel continuously for over 100 years. Step back in time and maybe you'll see a cowboy or two.

Strater Hotel

The oldest of the historic Durango Colorado hotels Alright, time to unveil it. The Strater is the oldest of the Durango Colorado hotels still in operation. Built in 1887, it is a wonderful Victorian building that decorates historic Main Avenue. You can't miss its deep ruby bricks and pristine white trim.

I have it on the authority of my husband's sister and her spouse, that the Strater is a lovely place to stay. They have Henry's Restaurant right onsite (yummy!), and the Diamond Belle Bar, too. A honky tonk piano is often being played there (sometimes accompanied by singing), and the waitresses dress in authentic - skimpy - 1880's bar-wear!

Also on the premises is the Diamond Circle Melodrama, which performs...you guessed it...melodramas during the summer season. And if reading is more to your liking, the rooms boast guest diaries, where people record their Durango Colorado hotel memories of honeymoons, anniversaries and such you can peruse.

So pull on your travel shoes, and let time take you back to a simpler era, an elegant era, at these Durango Colorado hotels. Then let us know how you like your stay with our Rate Your Stay In Durango survey. We want your reviews, too!
