Try Durango Colorado Camping and Take a Break From Technology
Durango Colorado camping gives you the chance to leave technology behind. Go ahead, rough it awhile! While we’ve never camped in one of the following campgrounds (yet), we did camp in an old Winnebago on our own property one night. We do plan to try one of the campgrounds in the future. At least once we get to move out. The Durango Colorado camping options listed below will hopefully give you a wide variety of choices for where you can get back to nature while you’re on your mountain adventure vacation. Peruse the list, then let us know what you thought of your stay. You can give us your review by using our

One of several choices for Durango Colorado camping, the Alpen Rose RV Park sits two miles north of Durango along the Animas River. With shaded, grassy sites and no highway noise, you’ll find peace from everyday life camping here. An onsite trout pond gives you easy access to fishing, right there. They also have a heated pool and an arcade to entertain the kids (and you!). A daily pancake breakfast is available. They’ll also help you book a round of golf at nearby Dalton Golf Course (with a discount as an Alpen Rose customer). With a store onsite, you can get a few groceries or gifts without leaving the park. A laundry facility is also there for customers’ use. And, if you really can’t stand to be away from technology, they have free cable TV and high-speed internet access. Of all the places for Durango Colorado camping, Cottonwood Camper Park is the closest to town. Close enough to walk to the train and downtown to shop. In addition, it sits right beside Lightner Creek, and near the Animas River, so you can go fishing nearby, as well. They have flush toilets, showers and sanitary disposal onsite, as well as one DSL internet hook-up available. This park is open from May 1 through October 31. Five Branches Camper Park 4677 County Road 501-A Bayfield CO 81122 Phone: 970-884-2582 Fax: 970-884-9765 Open mid-May through mid September
Highlights: 15 and 30 amp sites Electricity, water and sewer
Of the Durango Colorado camping sites, this is one of our favorite locations. We hope to try it out next summer. Right on the shore of Lake Vallecito (on the “quiet” side of the lake), it’s tucked beneath towering Ponderosa pines, with breathtaking views. To one side runs the Pine River, one of the two rivers that flow into Vallecito Lake. They have a small grocery onsite, for those items you may have forgotten, plus a small play area for the kids. They offer weekend breakfasts and a Sunday potluck, too. Obviously, since you’re right on a river and lake, there’s fishing right at hand. If you don’t have your own tent or camper, Five Branches also has small cabins and cottages you can rent, from “camper cabins” with minimal amenities to cabins with bathrooms and kitchenettes. If you like birds, we also go to that side of the lake to view ospreys (our daughter is crazy for raptors). While one of our Colorado bird book asserts that ospreys only migrate through the area, the ospreys obviously didn’t read it. They nest in the tops of dead pines, eating fish from the lake. Not only that, but in 2002, when all the huge fires were going on right at the lake, the adults stayed on the nests through the fires and fledges theier young! You can see ospreys from early April until late August (or perhaps into September), and the babies usually fledge from late July to early August. Truly a gorgeous setting. Come check out our favorite of the Durango Colorado campgrounds, and maybe you’ll see us there! Or parked down the road watching the ospreys… KOA Durango East 30090 US Hwy. 160 Durango CO 81301 Phone: 970-247-0783 Toll-free: 1-800-KOA-0793 Open May 1-October 15

How about Durango Colorado camping with a mini-golf area onsite? The KOA East has it. They also have a pavilion/meeting room, a snack bar, and offer (if you need technology) free wireless internet service. A TV lounge gives you a place to relax at the end of the day, or book a site that offers free Cable TV. A grocery store provides for those items you forgot, or gifts and souvenirs for friends you left behind. Their swimming pool is open from late May to mid-September. Planned activities are also offered, such as rock climbing, mountain biking and river rafting. They also have a jeep tour company they’ll arrange tours with for you and several horseback riding stables they can recommend. Check them out for your next Durango Colorado camping vacation. Another of the Durango Colorado camping options, this one has a restaurant onsite for breakfast, and an ice cream shop, fudge shop and Nightly BBQ. They also offer horseshoe pits, basketball, a game room and playground. You can buy groceries or gifts at their onsite store, go fishing in the Animas River (right alongside the campground), or wander into Durango for shopping. They also have available one-and two-room Kamping Kabins and Deluxe Log Kamping Kottages, along with their RV and tent sites. Some sites are right on the river (oh well, alongside, at least. Might get kind of wet, otherwise!) Another good choice for your Durango Colorado camping experience. The next choice for Durango Colorado camping lies along the Los Pinos River (the Pine River). It offers daily, weekly and monthly rates, for those who come to Durango for longer stays. Free Cable TV, laundry facilities and showers onsite make your stay more comfortable. They also have a fishing pond for the fishing buffs in your group, and sell tackle right there. Close to Bayfield, this campground puts you near Durango, Vallecito Lake and Lemon Dam. Plenty of places to go for fun. United Campground 1322 Animas View Dr. Durango CO 81301 Phone: 970-247-3853

How about a train running through one of the Durango Colorado campgrounds? United Campground can boast that! Four miles north of Durango, on the Animas River, they have a heated swimming pool, an arcade and horseshoes. If you can’t leave technology, they have both free cable TV and Wi-Fi internet access. But resist the temptation if you can. They have acres of meadow and large shade trees to help you get away from your normal routine. Don’t miss visiting their miniature horses while you’re there! Whichever place for your Durango Colorado camping you choose, you’re sure to enjoy your stay.
