Don’t Forget a Book About the Town When You're in Downtown Durango
Anyone in your family a bookaholic? My daughter and I are. When we go to downtown Durango, we like to shop for books, too. Besides, it always gets a groan from my husband and son, and that’s as much fun as browsing the books! (Don’t worry…they make us groan in return when they want to shop for tools or trucks.) Sure, Durango has a Waldenbooks, but who wants a national chain when you can get local know-how and regional expertise? Maria’s Bookshop has just that.
Maria’s Bookshop 960 Main Avenue Durango CO 81301 970-247-1438
While Maria’s Bookshop carries plenty of bestsellers, like any good bookstore, it also carries a large selection of titles more locally oriented. For instance, I found a great book on jeep trails of the San Juans to give to our son for his sixteenth birthday, one time we were shopping in Durango. Then they have plenty of books about the Durango train, nearby ghost towns and historic “locals” of interest. For instance, on March 20, 2007, they’re hosting, Brad Dimock, the author of The Very Hard Way: Bert Loper and the Colorado River. Who’s Bert Loper? Bert Loper is a famed river runner who spent more time on the Colorado River in his life than anyone ever had before. He died “at his oars in a Grand Canyon rapid at the age of eighty” in 1949 (quoted from the Maria’s Bookshop website description). Wow! River rafting at eighty! Now that makes me interested in checking out the book, just to see who this guy was. He started rafting the river in 1893. Since I love history, they’ve got my curiosity going, for sure. Maria’s Bookshop hosts a variety of events, including visits with local authors, book club gatherings and (of course) a Harry Potter party for the release of the seventh book. So when you’re in downtown Durango, be sure you stop by Maria’s Bookshop. The staff is friendly, helpful, and they know their books! And if you're a bookaholic, like I am, you'll be sure to find something to relax with at the end of a long day of adventure in Durango.
