Dining Durango Style: Find the Locals' Hangouts
Sometimes, the best dining Durango style is checking out restaurants you might walk right past without noticing. But, if you ask the locals, they can tell you which ones those are.Not the “here today-gone tomorrow” variety we can get so much, but the ones that have stood the “taste-test” of time. Below is one we like to frequent, even though we aren’t “locals” except a few weeks a year. We've also included the local "biker bar" stop, not a place we've been, but it sounds like fun anyway.
Olde Tymer's Café 1000 Main Avenue Durango CO 81301 970-259-2990
While I haven't been to Olde Tymer's in years, my husband and son had lunch there on one of our 2006 trips. I remember they make really good hamburgers, and the "boys" can vouch for this. This is another of the restaurants in Durango Colorado that's been around for a long time. It's a favorite of the locals, but I don't think as many tourists try it out. It's got a fun feeling, a bit like a 50's diner, and now that Colorado law prohibits smoking in all restaurants, it's not as smokey as it once was. (It's been around long enough to have gone from no separate provisions for non-smokers to no provisions for smokers.) Check it out. We think you'll be glad you did.
