Come Watch Some Colorado Birds With Us
Do you love birds? Then come "watch" some Colorado birds with us! In 2004, my daughter and I started helping a bird banding group in Minnesota. What a thrill to hold a bird in your hands, to hear its heart beat (likely in panic, though), to set it free again.
That's why it occurred to me that there must be lots of bird-lovers watching
wild birds of Colorado
, too. Since one of my sisters-in-law keeps a checklist of what species of birds she's seen wherever she goes, I thought we should add some information on
Colorado bird watching
.

Colorado has an incredibly helpful birding website you can visit for more information, too. It's called
Colorado Field Ornithologists
. I checked it out and found that they have downloadable, county by county checklists of what birds you'll see in the state. Plus, they list 880 places to go to see specific birds. To see the list of the 310 species you can see in La Plata County, go to their website, click on the link for "County Birding Website", then click on "birding by county" and choose La Plata county from the list. That's where you can download a PDF of the bird checklist, plus check out 17 locations in the county where you can watch birds. For your convenience, here's the
La Plata bird checklist
free to download. Obviously, you can watch birds just about anywhere - who can miss them? But this site makes it easy to see specific species you might be interested in. You can even become a member and get their newsletter.
Besides places for bird watching, we'll help you find
Durango bird watching clubs
(there are three), interesting tidbits about the
birds of Colorado
, and recommend our favorite bird guides (The Sibley Guide to Birds, for now, though National Geographic's bird guide comes in a close second). Then we'll reveal the
Colorado state bird
(I had to look it up, myself), and ideas for using
bird houses
to attract more birds. We'll see if we can find a some local places for
bird watching in Colorado
, find out what
Colorado upland birds
are (something I'd never heard of), and of course, offer some Colorado bird photos.
So join us as we learn lots more about birds in Colorado. We're incurable bird watchers now, and we're happy to share our passion with you. Thanks for stopping by!
