Colorado Bird Watching: An Adventure
If you're into Colorado bird watching, and want more adventure than your backyard, how about a few field trips? We usually take at least one side trip specifically to see birds while we're in the area. And they're always worthwhile. From hawks, eagles and ospreys, to coots, hummingbirds and songbirds, we see plenty of great birds of Colorado just creating our own field trips.

Besides field trips that various bird watching clubs organize, there are bird festivals in lots of places nationwide, and even international trips. Most of what I know is on trips near Durango, though the Colorado Field Ornithologist's website has field trips listed, some of which are out of state. You can find those by going to their
field trips
link.
The Durango Bird Club has a field trip every month on the second Saturday of the month. Most of these are within an hour's drive of Durango. You can also make your own field trips by checking out the list of places near Durango to see specific species. The link for the
La Plata County list
is here. Be sure you're respectful of any of the locations that are private property. Follow the recommendations for where to watch (this is usually from the road).

For other counties in the state and their lists, you can go to the Colorado Field Ornithologist site and click on the county birding link. That takes you to the county birding site. I've provided it here for your convenience:
Colorado County Birding
. There are also numerous festivals held in the state. The best link I've found for a listing of them is through the
American Bird Center
. When I looked, there were listings from February through May. Likely they change as the new ones come up. (You have to scroll down the page until you get to the "Bird Festivals in Colorado" section.)
Here's one of the more exciting things we saw on one of our "field trips". This is a papa osprey near the nestlings we saw at Vallecito Lake in 2006.
Anywhere you look at it, bird watching is great fun. So go out and see birds! Have fun!
