At The Bar D Chuckwagon
If you're coming to Durango (or live there, too), you really need to check out the Bar D Chuckwagon. This is dining at its most entertaining. The Bar D has been in business since 1969 (and we saw them early on in our forays to Durango). One of the wranglers is the same guy we saw when I was a kid! You must have reservations to go here, and it's worth it, believe me! Before supper's on, they have a half dozen shops to browse in, with everything from a blacksmith, to leather work, a record shop (with their recordings for sale), a shop that features the work of local artisans, and a chocolate shop, too! Kids can ride the Bar D train for fun. Adults can reserve the Chapel in the Pines for weddings!
The fun's only begun, though. The Bar D Chuckwagon serves a mouth-watering, authentic cowboy supper (on tin plates!). Your choice of barbequed chicken or beef - or for a real treat, rib eye steak - baked potato, baked beans, homemade biscuits with local honey, chunky applesauce and old-fashioned spice cake. Drinks are coffee, lemonade or water. The Bar D Wranglers can really pack in crowds, and while you might think that would make the supper line far too long, they manage to serve 700 guests in 20 minutes (it's true, we've been several times)! The Bar D dinner bell rings at 7:30 sharp. Everyone goes through the line, gets their grub, then goes back to their table to enjoy. Once you're done (and have taken your plate to one of the collection areas), it's time to settle in for a little light entertainment.
The Bar D Wranglers know how to entertain. With songs that run from Western movie themes, to old cowboy songs, to the silly and fun, they'll have you laughing and having a grand time.Then, if you really liked the show, they stick around to sell copies of the music after they're done. Don't worry about rain, if the day of your reservations rolls around and Durango's sunny skies turn soggy; they can completely cover the audience area and performance area. They perform rain or shine (moon shine)! So come on, all you dogies, and giddy-up to the Bar D Chuckwagon! As always, we value your opinion.
